More risk than reward with Cam Newton

The Panthers and Buccaneers are kicking off at 4:25 pm Eastern, so we won't know for sure until the inactives coming out. But it looks like there's a lot of risk in starting Cam Newton, as he's being called a gametime decisicon.

This report from earlier this morning makes it sounds like things could go either way. Newton practiced fully on Friday and he's optimistic he'll play, but Ron Rivera is still uncertain, and may go with Derek Anderson instead.

As we said in Friday's update, we're cool on Newton even if he starts. We tend to think the upside is less than it is for, say, Rob Gronkowski, so the risk of using Newton isn't necessarily worth it.

Given the uncertainty, if you have anything close to a comparable option, you're probably better off using it and not taking the risk of Newton sitting out. Anderson's presence wouldn't be a positive for the team's offense, but it need not be a death blow to those hoping to start Kelvin Benjamin.

Those who really want to use Newton could add Anderson to their rosters, and plug him in if Newton is inactive. Really sounds like it could go either way.
