Blake Bortles

Jaguars new quarterback is a gunner

The Jaguars are going with Blake Bortles at quarterback. It’s early, but I like his ability to get the ball downfield.

With most young quarterbacks, they’re kind of playing scared. They’re just looking to get the ball out of their hands and settle for short completions. They’ll gladly complete a 5-yard pass on third-and-13 and tort off the field.

With Bortles, he’s gunning it downfield. He’s not afraid of making mistakes. So he’s making a lot more big plays than the typical young quarterback.

I noticed this in the preseason. He averaged 16.3 yards per completion – best of every quarterback in the league.

And now that he’s playing in the real games, it’s starting to resurface again. He’s played only a half of football, but he’s averaging 15.9 yards per completion. Of the 37 other quarterbacks who’ve attempted at least 20 passes, none of them have averaged more than 13.2 yards per completion. The rookie quarterback who’s played the most, Derek Carr, is one of those just-hope-I-survive guys; he’s down at 8.6 yards per completion.

Strategically, this might not be a good idea. In trying the harder throws, Bortles probably won’t have a great completion percentage. He’ll get sacked more often, and he’ll throw more interceptions. Sometimes it’s smarter to just get the ball out of your hands.

But I like it. This stat – the idea of tracking yards per completion – was one I first started paying attention to about 10 years back with Ben Roethlisberger. He graded out really high in that area. And more so than any other quarterback, he’s the guy that Bortles tends to get compared to.

This would seemingly help Allen Hurns as most of the damage he's done has been on long passes, but with only 3 receptions total in the last 2 games do you think he'll start getting more targets with Bortles as QB?

I like that Hurns can get downfield. That's what Bortles does well. But it doesn't seem like the Jaguars like him that much. Hurns has started either of the last two games. In the first half of the Colts game, I saw a lot of three-receiver sets when Hurns wasn't even on the field. They had Allen Robinson and Cecil Shorts III as their starters, and Mike Brown playing ahead of Hurns. I like Hurns some (he showed some rapport with Bortles in the preseason) but he has to be considered a hit-or-miss guy at this point.

I do not think that you should ever start Blake Bortles on a season-long team. Not even on a bye because I do not think that there is a worse team than Jacksonville. On a dynasty team, he would be a good pick-up. You could also use him for DFS as a cheap option to load up on other positions and hope to get lucky and score 25 points with him.

Tampa Bay might be worse than Jacksonville.

Jaguars are getting tired of waiting for Toby Gerhart to produce. They went to a time-share last week. Robinson played about as much as Gerhart, and I think that was the plan going in -- I think he rotated into the game on the second play. They both got 8-9 carries. I'm not blaming it on Gerhart. The offensive line isn't good enough (they cut their starting right tackle last week) but clearly they're trying anything right now to try to get things going. Right now it's Gerhart and Robinson sharing time. Todman's down at third string right now, so not as much work for him.

I saw a stat that Hurns was on the field for 87% of the snaps this past weekend?!?

The 87 percent figure surprises me. I noticed on the early series that Robinson/Shorts were definitely the two starting receivers, and saw some plays where when they were in three wides Mike Brown was the third. Maybe they made a change or went to more four receivers in the second half. But I don't think we can count on Hurns being a huge contributor right now.
