I’m excited about Bryce Brown. I’ll be bidding on him as a free agent in every league I’m in. He’s a talented running, and he’s been effective. When LeSean McCoy got hurt a couple of years ago, they plugged him in and he ran for 169-plus yards in each of his first two games.
But Brown has had problems with fumbles (4 that year, in just 115 attempts), and he’s also had problems with decision making.
More so than other backs, Brown tends to start freelancing, trying to bounce plays outside. When it works, he looks great. But when he takes a 4-yard loss instead of a 1-2 yard gain, his coach’s blood starts boiling.
Over the last two years, Brown has LOST YARDS on almost one out of every 5 carries. That’s worst among the 74 running backs with at least 100 attempts.
That’s why (I think) Chip Kelly traded him away, and that’s why he’s been buried down at 4th string by the Bills, behind not only Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller (who are both now hurt) but also behind Anthony Dixon.
Brown has nice potential. By all means, grab him with a waiver claim and see if he develops. (That’s what I hope to do). But he’s not a guy to pick up with the idea that he’s simply going to step in and start putting up huge numbers. Definitely a lesser option this week against a good Jets defensive front.
