ASK THE EXPERTS appears weekly from training camp through Super Bowl with answers to a new question being posted Thursday morning. How the guest experts responded when we asked them: Which older players, if any, can help fantasy teams the rest of the way?

To be honest, I want nothing to do with any of those players. I think Father Time has come and gone for these guys. Granted, Frank Gore looked good in Week 10, but Carlos Hyde is clearly going to have a role in the 49ers' offense, which significantly limits Gore's upside. However, one older player who has stepped over the last few weeks, and appears to be, somewhat, trustworthy in fantasy again, is Larry Fitzgerald. Fitz has average 114 receiving yards per game over his last three contests, and he seems to have a good rapport with new QB Drew Stanton. Again, I don't know if you will be able to trust Fitz week in and week out, but the potential for a very nice fantasy finish, is certainly in play for the former star.

The patterns that offenses use players – and that defenses use to defend – are pretty much set by this point in the year. Whatever consistency you see in them from the past month is a fair expectation of the upcoming month. Particularly for receivers, defenses are already comfortable with their coverages and they are not going to alter it since it has been able to control those veterans.

Steven Jackson and Frank Gore are at the top of my list of oldies that could produce for my teams in the following weeks. Gore especially as San Francisco needs to play more smash mouth football as they struggle back into playoff contention. Of course both just posted one of their better games this year. I just hope it is not a peak but instead is more use by their respective teams.

Health notwithstanding, when we see veteran players' production trending down over a 4-5 week period of time it is a cause for concern for fantasy owners. There aren't many instances where an older player can turn that decline around and become a viable option for your team -- Steve Smith, Marques Colston, Wes Welker, even Hakeem Nicks (although he's not as grizzled as the other three) won't be your life preservers this season. At running back, Frank Gore and Chris Johnson might have a bright spot or two before your playoff run but trying to acquire either one is not likely to pay dividends unless you find them tossed aside on your waiver wire.

I am going to go with Andre Johnson as the one veteran player who could turn it around down the stretch. Coming into the week, Johnson is just the 31st ranked fantasy receiver (PPR scoring), which isn’t horrible, but it’s not great either. Johnson doesn’t have a single 100-yard game this season and he has just one touchdown. I am not looking for Johnson to suddenly be Top 10 or anything, but I think the switch at quarterback from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Ryan Mallet could be a good thing for Johnson. We don’t know what Mallet can do in the NFL, but we do know he has a big-time arm and the change in quarterback and then the dynamics with Johnson brings some hope. Johnson also gets a favorable schedule after this week. Four of the team’s final six games are at home in the dome, with the other two games being at a dome against the Colts and at Jacksonville. While Jacksonville hasn’t been a pushover, it’s still a good draw and Houston gets to play them still twice down the stretch. Johnson has a very solid schedule in the fantasy playoffs weeks also to make note of.

It's funny, in my most important (financially) league this week, I just cut ties with Marques Colston -- to pick up Anquan Boldin. And I hung onto Steve Smith, who's the oldest of all of them. I think you look at the player and how hungry he remains, no matter how old. With Boldin you've got a guy who's been written off multiple times, but he continues to play big and produce. As San Francisco makes its playoff drive, I expect him to continue to be solid. With Smith, I hung onto him because I believe he has a good game in there still, although I'd prefer not to start him. With Colston, I think perhaps the mileage and injuries have taken their toll -- and I feel that way about all the older running backs (like Frank Gore and Steven Jackson).
