Houston has a legitimate quarterback camp battle going on between Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett. It's not clear who will win, but it seems pretty clear that fantasy teams should not put any stock in either -- and by extension, should be cool on the Houston passing game.
According to this Houston Chronicle reporter, neither quarterback has stood out. "(Hoyer and Mallett) do not look substantially different in running the offense during OTAs. They have good and bad sessions, neither look particularly accurate or have distinguished themselves significantly during observed OTAs. ... There are some people in the media that feel strongly that Hoyer or Mallett look better in the limited sessions that media members see. That they see a difference in accuracy between the players. I do not see that specifically."
The article goes on to talk about running backs, receivers, and other positions on the roster. In the writer's view, DeAndre Hopkins is the only above-average receiver. None of the tight ends should be considered candidates for lots of chances and targets.
She's making Alfred Blue the favorite at backup running back, but admits she's not going on much there beyond him being in his second year in the offense. We're thinking former Eagles Chris Polk will be the better bet, and obviously whoever wins that job may be needed to start some games.
It's a pretty sobering look at a team that should have one great running back in Arian Foster and one great receiver in Hopkins, and little else of fantasy value on the offensive side of the ball.
