James White

Second-year back may be behind Bolden

We like James White, and it seems the Patriots do too. Two years in a row, they've been trying to get the youngster in the mix for a significant role in the team's backfield.

But so far, it's not working out. This story from the Boston Herald says that Brandon Bolden, not White, has emerged as the favorite for the Shane Vereen role in the offense. That would put him on the field for passing formations, obviously a critical piece in New England's attack.

White apparently looked good last preseason, recall, then struggled in the actual games. Ultimately he was phased out of the offense entirely. At this point, it seems very possible the same thing will happen.

It remains to be seen if Bolden can hang onto his lead. This being the Patriots, they won't be making any helpful announcements. Come Thursday, we'll get to see how these backs will be used. The healthy ones, anyway; veterans Travaris Cadet and Dion Lewis are both hurt, as is LeGarrette Blount.

So really, we'll see Bolden and White out there against Green Bay in the exhibition opener. Be interesting to see if White can show us something.
