Tyrod Taylor

Unlikely name emerging as candidate for Bills quarterback job

Rex Ryan must be pining for the days of Mark Sanchez. At least then, for a while, he knew who his quarterback was and (based on performance and other options) should be.

Last year he had Geno Smith and Michael Vick. And this year he's got Matt Cassel and EJ Manuel. And the guy who just might be the one fantasy teams should be focusing on, shockingly, in Tyrod Taylor.

According to this article, Manuel seems to be slipping out of the picture, while Cassel and Taylor are doing battle. And most likely it will be Cassel in Week 1. But anyone who's followed Cassel's career lately knows he probably won't stay there for long.

And then it's Taylor time, and there's a little more fantasy appeal there.

As a backup with Baltimore for several years, Taylor had nearly as many rushing attempts (27) as pass attempts (35). He passed for 199 yards and rushed for 136.

Same story in the exhibition opener against Carolina: 5 of 8 for 49 passing yards, with 6 runs for 47 rushing yards. The Bills are going to want to run the ball a lot this season, so maybe having a quarterback that can do his part will be the eventual decision.

Not saying Cassel won't win the job, but it will be surprising if he keeps it.
