What might it take to get Ray Rice signed? A team not shy of signing controversial players which also happens to have a handful of running backs dealing with injuries, that's what. And that's the story for the Bills right now.
LeSean McCoy injured a hamstring yesterday, joining a list that includes Anthony Dixon (calf), Fred Jackson (hamstring), Bryce Brown (hamstring) and Karlos Williams (illness). McCoy is obviously the most important injury, while Williams -- who has impressed in the preseason -- the most mysterious one. The Bills say it isn't injury related, but he was hospitalized and will be sidelined multiple weeks.
Buffalo believes all those backs will be healthy for the start of the regular season, but they've still got three preseason games to get through, starting tomorrow night. They'll be going with a couple of no-name rookies on Thursday, and there's a report out now that Rice is on their radar.
Rex Ryan doesn't shy away from controversy (Richie Incognito), and he has a history with Rice from their Ravens days. And the Bills need a warm body at the position.
So Buffalo's running back depth chart is uncertain. They've also got some injuries at receiver -- Sammy Watkins (glute), Robert Woods (lower leg), Percy Harvin (hip). It will be an interesting lineup the team fields in this week's exhibition.
