If you drafted Bishop Sankey a year ago, you're well aware of the risk in counting on unproven rookie running backs, including ones that seem to be going into the best situation. And you're further aware that Sankey might not be that good.
David Cobb is just a fifth-round pick, but by all accounts he's having a solid training camp, and he's going to get a chance to show what he can do. Cobb will get an extended look in Sunday night's exhibition, says the coaching staff.
Does this mean Cobb can take Sankey's job? Anything is possible. It might just mean he'll get a shot to be a complementary back in the offense. But Sankey has shown nothing to indicate he will be any better this year than last year, and the Titans can't wait forever -- jobs are at stake. They could be giving Cobb a chance to show he can be a starter.
We'll see, but it definitely makes Sunday's exhibition very interesting, beyond the obvious appeal of Marcus Mariota and Zach Mettenberger. if you're drafting this weekend, keep Cobb in mind as a late-round pick just in case he winds up as the No. 1 in this backfield sooner rather than later.
