Goal-line receiving

An overview of the busiest pass catchers inside the 10

Let me take a second and look at the receivers who have been featured around the end zone. That is, when a team is inside the 10-yard line, what players are they trying to get the ball to? And which have been successful?

As we hit the halfway point of the season, 47 players have been the intended target on at least 4 passes in that part of the field. And I’ve got all those players listed out below.

I’ve listed them in order of workload. Only four have been the intended target on at least eight of these players. Julio Jones and Rob Gronkowski, of course, are two of those. Jarvis Landry and Larry Fitzgerald are the two others.

Of the 47 players, six have caught at least 80 percent of the passes thrown to him – Jamaal Charles, Eric Decker, DeAndre Hopkins, Randall Cobb, Tyler Eifert and Jordan Reed. (Note that for these stats, they’re through Week 8, so Eifert actually added to his big haul on Thursday night against the Browns.)

Four players caught under 25 percent of their passes. Anquan Boldin (1 of 7) and Michael Crabtree (1 of 5) are way down there, and Terrance Williams and DeVante Parker are a combined 0 of 9. I believe all or most of Parker’s attempts came at the end of Miami’s blowout loss to the Bills back in Week 3 (it’s not as if they’ve been using him all along).

Five players have scored on at least 75 percent of these players. Hopkins leads the way at 83 percent. I believe Eifert will be leader after Week 9. Larry Fitzgerald is at 75 percent. And two Colts are at 75 percent – Coby Fleener and Donte Moncrief.

A few players have a black dot in front of their name. Those are guys who accounted for over a third of their team’s targets in this part of the field.

Each player comes with six numbers. There’s attempts and completions. Then you see “EZ”, which is the total of touchdowns and 2-point conversions. Then you see completion percentage and end zone percentage (the ratio of plays in which the player scored). And finally there’s a three-digit code, and that shows the team totals for Attempts, Completions and Scores.
