Question

What two teams have gone the longest without playing a game on Thanksgiving?

Answer

San Diego (1969) and St. Louis (1975). And by St. Louis, we're talking the Rams. Oddly on the last year they played on Thanksgiving, at Detroit, the St. Louis Cardinals hosted the other game on that day.

I remember that St. Louis game. I was a Dolphins fan, and Bob Griese came out throwing. Yes, that Bob Griese. I think he had 5 or 6 TD passes against the Cardinals, who were not bad in 1975, at St. Louis and Jim Hart. This is good Ian trivia stuff - how the heck was there a Thanksgiving game in 1975 that did not include the Cowboys or Lions? The Rams played the Lions. Did 1975 pre-date Dallas being the other Thanksgiving team traditionally?

Per the NFL Record & Fact Book, Dallas started hosting Thanksgiving Day games in 1966. There were two exception years in the '70s. In 1975, the St. Louis Cardinals hosted the Buffalo Bills, losing 32-14. O.J. Simpson the next year (in Detroit) ran for 273 yards, but he was pretty ordinary in the Cardinals game -- 85 yards and a touchdown. In 1977, Cardinals hosted again, losing 55-14. That was the Dolphins game you remembered, with Bob Griese tossing 6 TDs.
