The Fantasy Index Open is an all-comers competition, with both industry analysts and the general public in the field. The first two positions were won by civilians. Now the professionals have won two straight. Andy Richardson won the tight ends, and Tony Holm of Fantasy Sharks took first place in the wide receivers category.
Especially at the field positions, injuries tend to become key, and that was definitely the case this position, with Dez Bryant (top 5 on most boards) missing half the season and Jordy Nelson not playing at all. Kelvin Benjamin also missed the season, but that injury occurred before the deadline for picks.
The Nelson injury worked out handsomely for Holm. He ranked the Green Bay receiver only 16th, the lowest of any of the 192 entries. So when that injury occurred, it benefitted Holm more than anyone else. He also did well by ranking Alshon Jeffery only 17th; Jeffrey (higher on the vast majority of boards) had a few good games but was hurt for much of the year.
Holm also scored with some other choices. He was higher than most on Brandin Cooks (8th), and was smart to sneak Amari Cooper (18th) and Allen Robinson (20th) onto his card.
The top of Holm’s ballot wasn’t particularly good. He went with Demaryius Thomas as his No. 1 receiver, dropping Antonio Brown down to 5th. Just over 10 percent of the field was able to correctly identify Brown and Jones as the top 2 wide receivers. But the Nelson injury proved to be more important, statistically, and lifted Holm to first.

Dave Pizzica of Springfield, Pa., meanwhile, has moved into the overall lead. He finished in the middle of the pack at kickers and just outside the top third in defenses, but he’s heated up recently, finishing in the top 4 in both tight ends and kickers.
Zach Leavitt of Colorado and Pete Collins of Illinois aren’t far behind, and the two most important positions are still left to grade – quarterbacks and running backs.
