Jacksonville defense

Injuries, surgeries hurt sleeper appeal

I had been kicking around Jacksonville as a sleeper fantasy defense. They had some pass rush ability anyway, and in the offseason added one of free agency's best defensive linemen, two top defenders in the draft, and they get last year's top pick back from injury.

But injury luck still seems to be going against them. Jalen Ramsey suffered a meniscus tear in his knee, an injury that will be either multi-week or multiple months. If it's the more severe one, he'll likely miss at least part of the regular season.

Jacksonville's other rookie, Myles Jack, is currently healthy, but he fell to them in the first place because he may need knee surgery at some point himself.

And last year's top pick, pass rusher Dante Fowler, tore his ACL a year ago, so he'll be seeing his first action this preseason. He should be healthy, but there's going to be an adjustment period that he didn't get as a rookie.

Right now I've got the Jaguars around 15th in a scoring system that gives credit for sacks, turnovers and defensive touchdowns. They'll probably move up or down after we find out Ramsey's status; he's getting a second opinion on the severity of the knee injury.

But you'll want to see these guys healthy and moving well on the field before getting too optimistic about them being a nice 2016 sleeper defense.
