Plenty of nice things have been written and said about Sterling Shepard. He’s been everything the Giants were hoping for thus far, working with the first-unit offense all along. With that team also having a good passing system, we’re ranking him ahead of three wide receivers selected in the first round – Laquon Treadwell, Josh Doctson and Will Fuller.
That’s a little nerve-racking, since wide receivers selected in the first round are supposed to be better than those selected in the second. But there are always exceptions, with Anquan Boldin leading the way with 101 receptions back in 2003 (the Cardinals actually drafted a wide receiver in the first round that year – Bryant Johnson).
While it’s nice to select a can’t-miss star who was drafted in the top 10 overall, there aren’t a lot of those guys. And eventually you have to get down to what the players are doing on the field and how they’re being used.
It’s early, and Shepard hasn’t done much of anything yet against a real live opponent, but he seems to be on pace to be an above-average rookie. And while Shepard wasn’t selected in the first round, he was at last chosen early in the second round.
In the last 10 years, 79 wide receivers have been chosen in the first two rounds. Of this group, 7 of the top 17 are players who weren’t chosen until the second round.
Here are those 79 players, with the second-round choices in bold. They are in order of fantasy points, with 1 point for every 10 yards and 6 points for each touchdown.
