The winner of the Fantasy Index Open is a project manager from Gaithersburg, Md. Ken Valis was able to outperform the 222-man field, who collectively submitted 26,640 picks at the six player categories.
Valis didn’t dominate at any one position, but he put together a well-rounded entry. He ranked 12th at both running back and wide receiver, 29th at tight end and 34th at quarterback. He only average in the kicker and defense categories.
Valis had the only entry that ranked in the top 40 at all four of the premium positions. Only two others made it in the top 40 in three of those positions: Ian Allan (yes, me) and Daniel McDonald of Torrance, Calif., who both finished in the top 5.
Ryan Murphy, a teacher from East Berlin, Pa., came on strong at the end, finishing 28th at running back and 2nd at quarterback to finish in the No. 2 spot overall.
Third place goes to Michael Livengood of Ward, Ark., and he’s perhaps the most impressive of all. He was also able to finish 2nd in this competition in 2013. It’s difficult to finish in the top 5 in this competition; to do it twice is noteworthy.
Livengood was one of only two competitors to rank in the top 100 at all six positions. Last year’s champion, Frank Rotella of Sewell, N.J., also pulled that off but couldn’t put together a difference-making board in any of the money positions, finishing 31st overall.
With the win, Valis will soon be the owner of a really huge and really cool trophy from the team at Affordable Trophies. They’ve been partnering with us on this contest for years.
Both Valis and Murphy earn berths in the Experts Poll in the magazine, competing in a similar contest in a 20-man field composed mainly of industry experts.
Pete Gould, a dental surgeon in Nottingham (England) wins the Mr. Irrelevant Award, finishing with the low score. He took a lot of big chances (not including, for example, Ezekiel Elliott, Mark Ingram and Devonta Freeman among his top 20 running backs) and not enough of them worked out.
