One of the issues with the Fantasy Index Open is how to score it. If you attach a value to each of the players graded, the busts tend have a big impact – Tony Romo, Keenan Allen, Jamaal Charles. Those players can overshadow what happens with the more successful players.
In the Experts Poll (with the 20 industry analysts), I score the picks two ways – the standard format I’ve been using for years, using a declining multiplier scale, but also what I call “Baseline Scoring”, where you kind of just toss out all the lesser picks. With many readers having taken the time to enter, I figure it makes sense to extend them the courtesy of running those numbers through the alternate system, seeing how the results change.
With Baseline Scoring, the assumption is that while a player list is a starting point, fantasy owners will invariably adjust their rosters along the way with trades and waiver claims. That is, if somebody drafted Romo and Allen, when those guys got hurt they might replace them with Alex Smith and Tyrell Williams or whatever. So when a player suffers an obvious injury, the preseason pick should be afford some statistical relief.
I decided on this format. In typical fantasy leagues, there are 12 starters at QB, TE, PK and DEF. So let’s assume that if you don’t land one of those starting players, somehow you’ll be able to obtain the #13 player to help you along – that’s probably about the worst you’ll do at that position. So when grading players, I’ll look not at overall production but instead how much better they are than the baseline player. And anybody worse than the baseline just goes down as a zero. The 13th-best players at those positions were Andy Dalton (324.7), Coby Fleener (87.3), Buffalo (93) and Matt Prater and Sebastian Janikowski (who both scored 124).
With WR and RB, there are twice as many starters, so I went down to #25 at those spots, meaning Dez Bryant (132.1 in a partial year) and Rashad Jennings (103.4) were the benchmark guys.
With this kind of scoring, it makes running backs more important. In Standard Scoring, running backs account for 17 percent of the points. In Baseline Scoring, running backs account for 47 percent of the scores (more than QB, WR, TE and K combined). But that’s kind of fantasy football, isn’t it? There’s a lot more depth at wide receiver (where the guys in the 30s are scoring 40-50 more points than the running backs in the 30s).
This is a much more forgiving scoring system. Note, for example, that Tony Romo and Teddy Bridgewater go down as just as good as Cam Newton and Carson Palmer in this format (since Andy Dalton was slightly better than both of those quarterbacks). But it’s another way to look at things, putting the emphasis on finding players, rather than penalizing for big misses.
Anyhow, I ran the numbers.
My first observation is that Ken Valis of Gaithersburg, Md., is still in the No. 1 spot. He won the Standard Scoring, and he’s also first in Baseline Scoring. So nobody should suggest that Valis won simply because he avoided picking a few guys like Romo and Jamaal Charles. Valis’ picks were the best.
But there were some big movers. Eric Gustitus of Exeter, Pa., most notably, moved up from being just outside the top third (77th) into the No. 2 spot. And Steve Math of Austin moved up from 95th to 7th.
Jesse McGuigan of Pittsburgh was the biggest mover of all, moving from the bottom 10 percent up until top 15. Presumably a guy who got burned using a premium pick or two on a washout player. Others who improved by at least 40 spots …
