Jimmy Garoppolo is going to fetch a pretty penny in a trade, if the Patriots deal him at all. The same is true of franchised Kirk Cousins. The other available quarterbacks this offseason (Jay Cutler, Colin Kaepernick) have had numerous chances. So suddenly Mike Glennon's name is coming up as a possibility for quarterback needy teams.
Glennon had a credible rookie season, but the Bucs weren't impressed enough not to sign Josh McCown in the offseason. They then selected Jameis Winston in the following draft. The question is, did they give up on Glennon too quickly? Ian Rapoport believes the Bears and Jets are the likeliest landing spots for Glennon, and both those teams need a starter.
I pulled the numbers from Glennon's 18 career NFL starts and ratcheted them back to a 16-game season; if he'd started for some team all of the 2016 season. Then I placed those numbers against 2016's actual starting quarterbacks (guys who started for most of the season for their teams). That ended up leaving out Cleveland, which had three different quarterbacks start three, five and eight games.
Glennon threw 28 TDs in those 18 career starts, so 25 in a 16-game season. That's a slightly above-average number; only a dozen quarterbacks threw more in 2016.
But he averaged just 217 passing yards per game, and that would have been a bottom-5 number, better only than Tyrod Taylor, Brock Osweiler, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Colin Kaepernick -- four guys who either won't be Week 1 starters next year, or their teams wish they wouldn't be. And his quarterback rating was just 85.1, also a number that would have been down in the bottom third of NFL starters a year ago. He's completed only 59 percent of his passes, also a lesser number in today's NFL.
Not to say Glennon can't be a viable starter. Considering he was just a rookie when he made most of those starts, he didn't fare too badly. And quarterback rating isn't everything -- there were some good NFL quarterbacks down there with him last year. But if the Bears or Jets give him a big contract to start for them next season, it's very debatable whether either team will have solved its quarterback situation. Might just be another stopgap, and those teams will be looking for a franchise guy a year later, too. Glennon's career numbers (adjusted to 16 games) against 2016's starting quarterbacks, sorted by QB rating, are shown below.
