Blackout: We are naming two overall champions

Miguel Tames and Dave Cohen are the overall Fantasy Index Blackout champions for the 2017 season. Each will each receive a free 2018 Fantasy Index SuperFanatic newsletter subscription and a copy of Fantasy Football Index magazine. Click through to see why we awarded two prizes.

Unfortunately, we messed up Week 17 -- the final week of our season-long Fantasy Index Blackout competition -- in a big way. We mistakenly set up the Week 17 contest system to stop accepting entries at 7 a.m. Eastern time on Sunday morning, Dec. 31. Typically Bruce Taylor does that work for us, but he was on an international flight that didn't touch down until about 4:30 p.m. Eastern time -- too late to fix the problem. Many readers were unable to enter or change their lineups Sunday morning.

As a result, we've removed all Week 17 scores from the overall standings.

That makes Miguel Tames of Miami our overall champion for the year. He outscored Dave Cohen of Brooklyn, N.Y. 2,433.40 to 2,431.15 -- a margin of 2.25 points, or .092 percent. (That's .00092!)

That is a big bummer for Dave Cohen and the other folks who submitted their Week 17 Fantasy Index Blackout lineups before Sunday morning. If you include the Week 17 scores from submitted lineups, Dave Cohen finishes in first place, 2.65 points ahead of Eric Wheeler of Seattle, with Miguel Tames in third place..

It seems fair to award two overall first prizes -- one each for Miguel and Dave. Congratulations, guys!

Those of you with long memories may recall that we had an entry deadline blunder in Week 3, as well. We aren't making any effort to recalculate standings with those scores included, because we can't know how many entrants (including Fantasy Index podcast guru Justin Eleff) cheated and submitted their lineups after games were completed.

We plan to offer this game again next year. In the offseason we will rewrite the code to prevent the entry deadline problems. (Those problems arose because we based Fantasy Index Blackout administration on the code we wrote for the Fantasy Index Open contest, which requires firm entry start and end dates.) We'll get that squared away for next year. If you have additional suggestions, please send them to customerservice@fantasyindex.com.
