Question

Sam Darnold and Josh Allen both were chosen in the top 10, and they’re both going to the AFC East. When was the last time two teams from the same division both drafted quarterbacks with top-10 picks?

Answer

2011, with Tennessee (Jake Locker) and Jacksonville (Blaine Gabbert). This also happened in 1999, with Tim Couch and Akili Smith both going in the top 3. In the Super Bowl era, only other occurrence was in 1970, with the first two selections of the newly formed AFC Central, with the Steelers selecting Terry Bradshaw (1) and the Browns selecting Mike Phipps (3). For divisions and first-round quarterbacks, it will be tough to ever beat the 1983 AFC East, with all five teams using first-round picks on quarterbacks: John Elway, Jim Kelly, Tony Eason, Ken O’Brien and Dan Marino (Elway played for Denver but was drafted by the Colts).
