Chris Herndon’s NFL career is getting off to a lackluster start. A report indicates he was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated over the weekend.

The report, written by Susan Miller Degnan of the Miami Herald, says Herndon was taken away in handcuffs after an accident in New Jersey that totaled another vehicle.

The report suggests the driver of the other vehicle, a 76-year-old man, wasn’t seriously injured.

The incident likely will trigger some kind of league suspension, probably sidelining Herndon for his first few games as a pro.

The Jets selected Herndon in the fourth round, and with them not having much else at the position, he might be their starting tight end. He caught 40 passes for 477 yards and 4 TDs last year at Miami. The previous year, the Hurricanes had an interesting tandem of tight ends in Herndon and David Njoku.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins signed with Jacksonville, so New York needs a new starter at the position. It drafted Jordan Leggett in the fifth round last year, but he didn’t play much as a rookie. Eric Tomlinson has been primarily a blocker. Clive Walford (another former Miami tight end) never really got his career off the ground with the Raiders.

Herndon, of course, isn’t a can’t-miss option (short term or long term). He’s a mid-round pick. But of the 34 tight ends previously selected in the fourth round since 2000, nine (about 1 in 4) at some point in their career developed into a top-10 caliber tight end – the type of tight end somebody in your league would make one of the first 10 selected in a fantasy draft.
