Tyrod Taylor

Running quarterback goes to offense with quarterbacks running

A story in the Cleveland Plain Dealer indicates that Baker Mayfield is a long way from competing with Tyrod Taylor for the starting job. Not exactly a surprise, with Taylor a full-time NFL starter the last three years and Mayfield a green rookie. Hue Jackson has said all along that Taylor would be the starter.

As long as Taylor keeps the starting job, there's some fantasy value. Not necessarily as a passer, but for his running ability. Taylor was one of the league's most productive running quarterbacks a year ago, and Cleveland is an offense that is used to having that kind of player behind center.

A year ago, only three regular starters rushed for more yards per game than Taylor. Ranking 5th in that department was the Browns' primary starter, DeShone Kizer, and also showing up in the top 15 in his limited work was another Brown, Kevin Hogan.

Table shows all passers who averaged at least 10 rushing yards per game. Mayfield himself is a productive rusher, of course. He rushed for over 1,000 yards and 21 TDs in his four college seasons, with a pair of seasons over 300 yards.

But in 2018, it will probably be Taylor's show for most of the year, and there's some fantasy potential there. Not the worst choice for those who choose to wait on quarterbacks.

Love me some Tyrod. He also throws a beautiful deep ball for Gordon.

Cleveland fans and media will be clamoring for their beloved #1 pick first excuse they get, and I can't see Hue's coaching NOT! providing them a clamoring opportunity before all that long. Jimmy Haslam's not the type of owner to stand up to that, especially since I'm sure he too is quite proud of his genius #1 pick. David, you'll be scouring the waiver wire for a QB pickup about the time you get out the leaf blower.

I thought that Mayfield was the best QB in the draft. Having too many capable QBs is a problem they haven’t been fortunate enough to have in their franchises history.

I think it'll take either an injury to Tylor or the team drastically underperforming for the Brownies to put Mayfield out there. He's simply not ready. And if they don't want a Blaine Gabbert (et al) situation, they won't feed Mayfield to the dogs. So many promising QB talents over the years have been ruined that way before they ever should've seen the field.

The Brownies "drastically underperforming"?? So in this year's batch of rule changes did the NFL introduce the 'Negative Win', Paul? ;-)

Hahaha. Nice. I've seen a number of statements by "football people' (former players, etc.) to the effect that Cleveland could approach .500 if things fall into place.. The talent level has definitely been elevated by a few acquisitions and picks. So what I was getting at was that, if within the front office, an "oughta-be" 6-10 team falls on its face and goes 2-6 out of the gate, the decision is made to pull the plug on this season, Mayfield might get the call. To his detriment, I'm certain.
