Question
Mel Blount and Rod Woodson were both cornerbacks for the Steelers. They’ve both been the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, and they’re both in the Hall of Fame. Since the Defensive Player of the Year award was introduced in 1971, what’s the only other pair that’s done this? (Looking for two men who played the same position on the same franchise – both are in the Hall of Fame and both won the Defensive Player of the Year).
Answer
Chicago, with inside linebackers Mike Singletary and Brian Urlacher. (The Bears also had Dick Butkus at middle linebacker in the ‘60s, so it’s been a good position for them.) Two other teams have had pairs of like-position players, but in each case one of the players isn’t in the Hall of Fame. Steelers (Mel Blount, Rod Woodson), Dolphins (Jason Taylor, Doug Betters), and Vikings (Alan Page, Keith Millard).
