Question

Who are the only three running backs in league history who ran for more than 1,000 yards in a season who were best known not by their name but by their initials? (Eugene Hilton, for example, is best known as T.Y. Hilton – if he were a running back with a 1,000-yard season, he would be a correct answer).

Answer

O.J. Simpson, C.J. Spiller, C.J. Anderson.

I feel the same as Mike. I realize his first name was Ottis, but my recollection is that he was best known as O.J.

Clearly there’s some subjectivity here, but there’s a difference between guys who were known *primarily* by their initials and just *also* by their initials. C’mon, LJ? No.

It's fair to complain about Anderson not being mentioned. "OJ" was more than a casual nickname. It was at least at times during his career on similar footing with Ottis (I think). To be honest, I didn't think much about it when composing the question. I took the league-compiled list of 1,000-yard rushers and pulled out everyone going by initials. They have him listed as Ottis, so he never got in the discussion. Special player. When he came out in 1979, his first game was at Busch Stadium against the Cowboys, who had gone to the Super Bowl the previous year. Ottis/O.J. ran for 193 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown.

I still say AD Adrian Peterson should be included. He had a 2000 yd season, was known by many as AP but his real initials was AD All Day

To me a good rule of thumb is if I have *no idea* what the initials actually stand for. With Spiller and Anderson, I do not. With Simpson, I'm not sure I did before the murder trial. With the rest of these guys (MJD, Peterson, etc.) their actual names are well-known.

If we're dipping back into college guys, I was a fan of Nebraska running back I.M. Hipp.

This is a really horrible trivia question.after they figured that out, Andy makes up some after the fact rules. If you don't know what the initials stand for is the rule of thumb. There correct answers, Orenthal James Simpson which the whole world knows after murder trial.Correlle Javon is CJ Anderson and Spiller"s name has been announced many times as Clifford. Why is a wrong answer AD Peterson?.Not many knows that is All day and many think its AP instead of AD.Who knows what J2K means in Chris Johnson'name?

O.J. Anderson is the only guy I'd argue about. He did go by O.J. a lot later in his career when he was with the Giants. The other ones are simply nicknames and were never the player's actual name (AD or LT, not to mention LT only belongs to Lawrence Taylor).

LT, MJD, AD, TD (Tony Dorsett) -- those aren't names, those are nicknames. That's the difference.

Ian, I agree that that's the key distinction, although the example you gave of T.Y. Hilton doesn't actually then work, because T.Y. aren't really his initials - they're a nickname from his dad.

Ben, I was making a personal observation, not an after the fact rule anyone else has to follow. The question is fine, involving players best known by their initials rather than their names. Yes, there is some subjectivity. But Simpson is best-known as OJ, and Spiller as CJ, and same for Anderson. Peterson is not best-known as AD and Larry Johnson was never best-known as LJ. Which is why they are wrong answers.

Andy, your question, Who is Rbs not known buy their name but known by their initials? Simple enough q1uestion.You didn't say must be rule of thumb no idea what the initials stand for?We all know Peterson is AP,Drew jones is MJD,LT is Tomlinson.Seems simple to me but what do I know?Ask anyone who LT Is.I think its a initial of a running back with 1000 yards known by his initials.
