Question

Other than the three NFC North teams (Green Bay, Chicago, Detroit), which two pairs of teams have been in the same division the most consecutive seasons? (From 1950 to 1966, NFL had “conferences” but these teams played each other home and away in each of those seasons – they were division-like arrangements.)

Answer

The NFL introduced divisions in 1933, and Philadelphia and Washington have been in the same division all along (Washington played in Boston 1932-36). The Giants have almost always been in the same division as those teams but got bounced into a separate division for two seasons in the late ‘60s. Next in seniority are the 49ers and Rams. San Francisco joined the NFL in 1950 and have been playing the Rams home and away all along. Both Philadelphia-Washington and Rams-49ers play this week. The Steelers and Browns have also been playing annually since 1950, but that series was put on hold for three seasons in the late ‘90s.
