Trivia for December 29, 2018

Question

What player started the most games in NFL history without ever appearing in a playoff game? This player was a linebacker, playing with five different teams from 1998 to 2012.

Answer

Takeo Spikes. He was a first-round pick of the Bengals in 1998 and later played for the Bills, Eagles, 49ers and Chargers. The player with the 2nd-most starts, I believe, was former Lions center Dominic Raiola.

Will Joe Thomas be the first HOF player ever in the super bowl era to never have appeared in a playoff game? Ian? Dennis Lyons?

Joe Thomas is definitely the best player to never appear in the postseason. I am not certain if there are other, lesser players with more starts/games who also didn't make the playoffs. He started 167 games. Thomas should have made the playoffs in 2007. The Browns went 10-6 that year. They lost their wild-card spot when 13-2 Indianapolis, playing at home in the final Sunday night game of the season, opted to mail it in against 9-6 Tennessee. Thank you, Bill Polian. Thank you, Tony Dungy.

Takeo Spikes is another high level player to never get into the playoffs (219 games over 15 years). Doubtful if Spikes will make the HOF

OK. Looks like I messed this one up. Takeo Spikes started 215 games (and played in 219) and never played in a playoff game. I will double-check, but I'm pretty sure that's No. 1 all-time.

Apologies. I went back and changed the question. I have gone back and double-checked the career starts list. Not many players started more than 215 games, and all of those guys also played in playoff games.
