Question

The Broncos have agreed to a trade for Joe Flacco. Like Peyton Manning, Flacco was a Super Bowl MVP with a different franchise. What is the only other team that twice has featured quarterbacks who were Super Bowl MVPs somewhere else? Neither of the quarterbacks ended up making much of an impact (just seven combined starts between them).

Answer

The Rams. Joe Namath went 2-2 with the Los Angeles Rams in 1977 before the team switched to Pat Haden. Mark Rypien went 0-3 for the St. Louis Rams in the final three games of the 1995 season after replacing Chris Miller. If you expand beyond just quarterbacks, Oakland is the only team that’s taken on four Super Bowl MVPs, but other than Jerry Rice, they aren’t the most noteworthy of names – Larry Brown, Malcolm Smith and Desmond Howard. The Seahawks and Cardinals each have taken on three. Kansas City had the most notably Super Bowl MVP combo, with Joe Montana and Marcus Allen powering the team to an AFC Championship game appearance.
