Question
Adrian Peterson last year ran for 1,042 yards as a 33-year-old. Who are the only other two players in league history who’ve gone over 1,000 rushing yards when 34-plus years of age?
Answer
John Riggins and John Henry Johnson. Riggins ran for 1,239 and 1,347 yards for Washington in the 1983-84 seasons (also scoring 38 TDs in those 32 games). Riggins was 34 and 35 years old in those years. Johnson played for the 49ers and Lions in the ‘50s, but his two 1,000-yard seasons came when he was playing for Pittsburgh in 1962 and 1964, when he was 33 and 35 years old. Johnson turned 35 during the 1964 season, so if you want to get into counting days, Riggins was the oldest 1,000-yard rusher. Johnson was by far the oldest to run for 200 yards in a game – at 34, almost 3 years older than anyone else (according to the nice sortable database at the Pro Football Reference website).
