I think the way we get cocky entering each fantasy season is we forget the smack in the face that is Week 1. Guys we mocked or underestimated all preseason have ridiculously huge games. Guys we championed either limp off with an ankle or injury or just get stuffed at the line all night. Fortunately, it's just one week.

In these Monday recaps, I'll try to pick out some of the highlights and lowlights from all of Sunday's games. I don't see everything on Sunday; not possible. But here's the best and worst of what I saw.

Rams at Panthers: So a committee has come to the Rams backfield, and right now Darrell Henderson isn't a part of it. Decent touchdown-less game for Todd Gurley and touchdowns for Malcolm Brown; now we know why the Rams matched that offer. Monster game for Christian McCaffrey, who again played every offensive snap, good game for DJ Moore, some disappointment elsewhere on the board (Brandin Cooks etc.). Wish I had McCaffrey somewhere.

Titans at Browns: I sort of had a feeling the Browns might be feeling a little too good about themselves here. Maybe I underestimated Tennessee's defense. And we knew the Browns had some offensive line concerns. Collectively, factoring in also some stupid personal foul penalties, an ugly game by the Browns. I think Baker Mayfield will bounce back -- there were some tipped balls and whatnot -- but maybe he learned something in this one, too. Browns play the Jets next week and that's an interesting matchup of the quarterbacks selected in the top 3 picks a year ago.

Kansas City at Jacksonville: Between games of a Sunday morning doubleheader, my son asked me whether he should start Sammy Watkins or Emmanuel Sanders. He's a Broncos fan, and Sanders was facing what I think will be a flat Raiders team and Watkins was facing a presumably strong Jacksonville defense. So yeah, he left 46 points on his bench yesterday, thanks to me. Other notable takeaways is that LeSean McCoy looked good, Damien Williams produced like a fantasy starter, Tyreek Hill is going to miss some time with a shoulder injury, and Nick Foles is going to miss a lot. Is Gardner Minshew for real? His mustache certainly is. Impressive, albeit in garbage-time against a suspect defense. Watkins looks like a must-start for a little while.

Ravens at Dolphins: You want to say this went about as expected, but no one expected 59. Sometimes we talk about running up the score and the general response from people is "You don't like it, stop it" or "these are all adults and professionals, teams don't need to be nice." And OK, I get it. But calling for a fake punt up 32 points, or throwing touchdowns on 4th and goal with a monster lead...I just don't get the mentality. Maybe that's me. Miami is pretty much hands-off this season, nifty touchdown grab by talented Preston Williams, but seriously you can't use any Dolphins. Kudos to Lamar Jackson and Marquise Brown, did not see that coming, but let's qualify it a little, Miami doesn't have an NFL team at the moment.

Falcons at Vikings: I benched Matt Ryan everywhere given what was a very tough matchup. Sometimes even when you're right, you're wrong. Fortunately my backups (Josh Allen, Philip Rivers) delivered, but the reminder that sometimes garbage stats can save a bad fantasy day was delivered. Adam Thielen did OK in a game the Vikings proved they're content to just run when they can. Dalvin Cook looked awesome; glad I have him in one league (sadly not as many as I'd like). If he can stay healthy, guy is gonna be great. The whole Atlanta offense has a lot of good matchups upcoming -- stay the course.

Bills at Jets: A very Jets-ian loss. Led most of the way but didn't put Buffalo down completely and there you go. Looks like Sam Darnold is going to be throwing a whole lot of short passes -- 14 grabs for Jamison Crowder, on benches everywhere. Good game back for LeVeon Bell. For the Bills, it was Frank Gore early and Devin Singletary late, and it's probably going to be more of Singletary going forward; it has to be. If you're wondering why the Bills cut LeSean McCoy and not Frank Gore, uh, probably money.

Washington at Eagles: Last-minute decision to bench Carson Wentz (I though Eagles would win this game easily and Wentz might not do much) for Cam Newton went how most last-minute decisions go: poorly. Remarkable game for DeSean Jackson, kudos to Ian for calling it last week, though few could have expected it would be that big. Washington better than expected, but it's gonna be a long year. Derrius Guice went nowhere against the Eagles' tough defensive front. Nice game for Terry McLaurin who nearly had another long touchdown.

Colts at Chargers: Nice game for the Chargers offense, Marlon Mack and T.Y. Hilton. Brutal game for Adam Vinatieri, who correctly blames himself for the loss. Bad week to be facing Austin Ekeler, or to be Melvin Gordon. Philip Rivers got hit more than you want to see. Overall, the Chargers are good, but their defense is clearly going to miss Derwin James and their offensive line misses Russell Okung. Some weeks it will matter more than others. Also: they really need to give each team a possession in overtime. I can't understand why the competition committee doesn't see the wisdom of this. It's an easy change. Offenses have the advantage when you enter a fifth period. You'd think playoff games being decided by the team that wins the coin flip scoring a touchdown would have got it done.

Bengals at Seahawks: Bengals made way more of a game of it than should have been expected. Even with Joe Mixon going nowhere and then leaving with an ankle injury. Giovani Bernard is your handcuff who needs to be owned, played full-time once Mixon left. Tyler Lockett salvaged his day with a long touchdown, but gonna be tough for him sometimes in a run-heavy offense.

Lions at Cardinals: For about three quarters, all the Kyler Murray doubters were nodding their heads and smiling. And then the Lions let Arizona off the hook and we suddenly ended up with our second overtime game of the week and first tie. Huge game for David Johnson (actually really should have had another touchdown). Good game ultimately for Murray, Larry Fitzgerald, and tons of targets for Christian Kirk. Breakout game for T.J. Hockenson, looks like the Lions finally got their tight end choice right. Busy game for Kerryon Johnson but a reminder that Detroit isn't going to be a great running team. Next week Murray and the Cardinals go to Baltimore, that should be interesting.

Giants at Cowboys: Nice start for the Giants and Saquon Barkley, who opened with a 59-yard run. It was all Dak Prescott and his receivers after that. I don't know that Prescott will throw for 400 yards again, but clearly Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup will indeed be in for some good games. Start of a huge season for Evan Engram -- expected, yet I still wasn't able to draft him anywhere, guess everyone else expected it even more. Giants defense, ugh. Guess we can forget Tony Pollard as anything more than a handcuff.

49ers at Bucs: So Mike Evans came into this game dealing with an illness, and it obviously affected him. And maybe that was a factor in Jameis Winston's trainwreck game. Didn't help certainly. Big game for the 49ers defense, feasting on the matchup. We ranked them high but I doubt anyone started them anyway. I was going to, before switching last-minute to Detroit (which was pretty good, but not as great as San Fran). Score one for streaming defenses. Ronald Jones looked good, Tevin Coleman got hurt, and Raheem Mostert moves up the depth chart. San Francisco wins but their offense didn't look great doing it. Bruce Arians has his hands full with the Bucs.

Steelers at Patriots: So many takeaways from this game. Ben Roethlisberger looking older than elderly Tom Brady, who was dropping dimes all night. James Conner going nowhere. Freaking Rex Burkhead stealing work from James White. Donte Moncrief dropping passes. Josh Gordon, Julian Edelman and Phillip Dorsett all making plays -- how does Antonio Brown fit in and get enough targets to satisfy him? And why do the Patriots always make Pittsburgh's defense look so bad? I guess mostly I'm hung up on the Brown thing; hard to see it working to everyone's satisfaction. Or Burkhead, seeing as I have White everywhere, like most Index readers. Hopefully not a regular occurrence.

Monday, Monday: Two games and a lot of matchups no doubt hinging on Alvin Kamara, DeAndre Hopkins, Michael Thomas and Deshaun Watson. And maybe the Denver-Oakland game which won't be as high-scoring. I usually try to predict the scores of the Monday games and think I was right on probably two weeks out of 16 a year ago. I'm going with Denver, 23-13, and New Orleans, 34-30.
