Players land on IR all the time, but it's especially prevalent the last two weeks of the season. There's no point in keeping a guy on the roster who has little chance of playing in those games -- and no point playing players important to the future for the increasing number of teams with nothing to play for. This was one such day.
Matthew Stafford (back) is officially out for the year. It's not certain why the Lions didn't do this a while ago, but presumably they didn't need the roster spot. Stafford will be back in 2020 (and so, reportedly, will coach Matt Patricia), but it will be David Blough out there the last two weeks.
Evan Engram (foot) is out for the year. A few weeks ago, in the last wave of transactions you were allowed to make in an FFPC league, I picked up Kaden Smith, with the idea being that he might start the rest of the way. That now looks a lot more likely -- alas, Smith has had only one game with anything close to an Engram-like impact. As for Engram, that will make 8 missed games this season and 5 last season. Talented guy, but he's on the lighter side for a tight end and you start to wonder if his body is going to hold up to the rigors of the position.
Scott Miller (hamstring) is out for the year for Tampa Bay. The expectation is that Chris Godwin and Mike Evans are also done for the season, but the Bucs are apparently holding out hope for those guys. Most likely it will be Breshad Perriman, Justin Watson and practice squad call-up Ishmael Hyman as the team's main wideouts this week. And probably lots of two tight end sets, and according to Bruce Arians more passes to running backs, too.
Trey Quinn (concussion) is out for the year. That locks in Steven Sims as the slot receiver against a bad Giants pass defense. Sims saw 11 targets in that role last week, catching 5 balls and a touchdown.
These are today's most noteworthy IRs from a fantasy perspective, but it's early. If you've got an injured player on an eliminated team you're hoping will play in Week 16, you can be sure it's about as likely they're done for the season as playing this week.
