Question
Jason Garrett took over as the head coach in Dallas in 2010, and it’s looking increasingly likely that the team will complete the decade without appearing in a Super Bowl. Since the merger, who are the only two coaches who have been hired by teams and completed even more seasons with those teams without making it to a championship game? One of these coaches lasted 16 seasons; the other went for 11. Neither ever even made it to conference championship game.
Answer
Marvin Lewis with Cincinnati (2003-2018); he went 0-7 in playoff games. And Jim Mora with New Orleans (1986-1996); he went 0-4 with them in playoff games and later lost his two playoff games with the Colts.
Two other coaches last 10 seasons with teams without getting to Super Bowls: Marty Schottenheimer (Kansas City, 1989-98) and Dennis Green (Minnesota, 1992-2001).
