Question
It’s possible that two running backs will go over 1,000 receiving yards. (Austin Ekeler is sitting at 950 yards, and Christian McCaffrey is at 933.) This is unusual, since there have been only three such running backs in the Super Bowl era. Who were those three backs? Their seasons came in 1985 and 1999.
Answer
It happened with two backs in 1985 – Roger Craig (49ers) and Lionel James (Chargers). Marshall Faulk (Rams) did it in 1999. The Pro Football Reference website indicates that Bobby Mitchell of Washington had the most receiving yards by a running back in a season, catching 72 passes for 1,384 yards and 11 touchdowns in 1962 (in just 14 games, no less).
