Question

Who was the last player to score double-digit rushing touchdowns in a season while running for fewer than 300 yards? Hint: Said player scored 2 touchdowns in the Super Bowl in the same season.

Answer

Gerald Riggs, in 1991 for Washington. He was used as a goal-line back that year, with Earnest Byner and Ricky Ervins handling most of the running duties. Riggs ran for 248 yards in the regular season, with 11 TDs. He scored 2 TDs in each of Washington’s three playoff games that year. Two other running backs since the merger have run for fewer than 300 yards but double-digit touchdowns. Don McCauley for the Colts in 1975 (196 yards and 10 TDs) and Pete Johnson in 1984 for the Chargers and Bengals (205 rushing yards and 12 TDs). Four others have scored double-digit touchdowns with fewer than 300 rushing yards, but with some of the touchdowns coming on non-running plays: Don McCauley (1976), Tony Paige (1985), Vince Workman (1991) and website favorite Leroy Hoard (1991). That makes seven of these backs overall, and three of them came from the 1991 season.
