I saw a blurb go by indicating that Albert Wilson agreed to take a pay cut. Not surprising. He was due to make $9.5 million, and no team would want him at that price tag.
Now that his contract isn’t an issue, Wilson can get back to trying to win the slot job in Miami. He was surprisingly good at the end of last year. They played him more in their final three games, and he responded with 17 catches. If you’re playing PPR, any player averaging 5-6 catches per game gets your attention.
But not many downfield routes. Wilson average only 8.2 yards per receptions last year. Among wide receivers with at least 50 catches in the last 10 years, that’s the 2nd-lowest season of anyone. And Wilson scored only one touchdown.
In Miami, DeVante Parker should be their featured receiver. Preston Williams (if healthy) should be their other starter outside. Their other “starter”. But they’ll need somebody to play in the slot in three-receiver sets, and Wilson could be that guy.
Just don’t look for many downfield routes. Wilson is plenty quick and fast, but unlikely they use him on those kind of pass patterns.
In the last 10 years, only 30 receivers have caught 50-plus passes and averaged under 10 yards per reception. Three of those come from last year: Wilson, Mohamed Sanu and Russell Gage.
