Question
Happy Birthday, Frank Gore. He turns 37 today. He signed a one-year contract with the Jets last week. In his honor, who are the only two 37-year-old backs who have run for more than 200 yards in a season in the Super Bowl era? Both are in the Hall of Fame. One had two 1,000-yard seasons (both in his 30s) before ending his career with a different team (the Oilers) in 1966.
Answer
John Henry Johnson and Marcus Allen. Johnson went over 1,000 yards for the Steelers when he was 33 and 35 years old. Impressive stuff. He ran for 226 yards for the Oilers in 1966. Marcus Allen ran for 505 yards (and 11 TDs) for Kansas City in 1997. In regards to older running backs, it’s been 10 years since a back as old as Gore carried the ball in a game. Tony Richardson (also a Jet!) carried 5 times for 13 yards as a 39-year-old in 2010. Fred McAfee had 3 carries as a 38-year-old for the Saints in 2006.
