Question
Since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, who is the only player who has intercepted a pass and thrown an interception in the same game?
Answer
Tony Dungy, Pittsburgh Steelers, 1977. In a game against the Houston Oilers, Dungy (a defensive back) intercepted a pass and later took over at quarterback after injuries to Terry Bradshaw and Mike Kruczek. Dungy (a quarterback at the University of Minnesota) completed 3 of 8 passes in the game, with 2 interceptions. They were the only completions of Dungy’s career, and they included completions to Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. Swann, Stallworth and Dungy all ended up being named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
