Question

Cam Newton, remarkably, has thrown only 5 TD passes in 11 games. Since 2000, who are the only four quarterbacks who have finished seasons having started more than half of their teams’ games (at least 9 starts) without averaging at least a half a touchdown pass per start? This is an impossibly difficult question, so hints are in order. Two were former top-3 picks. One is currently a head coach. One was a second-rounder who got bumped when his team selected a quarterback No. 1 overall the following year.

Answer

2000 Akili Smith (3 TDs in 11 starts), 2010 Jimmy Clausen (3 TDs in 10 starts), 2000 Doug Pederson (2 TDs in 9 starts) and JaMarcus Russell (2 TDs in 9 starts). Carolina selected Clausen in the second round of the 2010 draft – the year before it chose Newton.
