Question

The Rams and Lions reportedly have agreed on a trade involving Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff. Both of those quarterbacks formerly were selected No. 1 overall. Previously, the Rams traded away another quarterback they selected No. 1 overall -- Sam Bradford. In the Super Bowl era, what other two teams have twice drafted quarterbacks No. 1 overall, then later traded away those players?

Answer

Colts and Patriots. The Colts drafted John Elway (1983) and Jeff George (1990) No. 1 overall, but later traded them to Denver and Atlanta. New England selected Jim Plunkett (1971) and Drew Bledsoe (1993) No. 1 but later traded them to San Francisco and Buffalo. Other quarterbacks who were drafted No. 1 overall but were traded: Alex Smith, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning.

Plunkett is an interesting guy. He played in only five games in 1975; the Patriots had moved on to Steve Grogan. Plunkett in his last four years in New England went 17-30 as a starter, with 43 touchdowns and 71 interceptions. Yet the 49ers in 1976 were willing to trade three first-round picks and a second-round pick to get him. He didn't work out there but rebounded nicely with the Raiders, winning a couple of Super Bowls.

If Nick Foles (involved in the Bradford trade BTW) ever wins the Super Bowl again, he could become this generation's Jim Plunkett. Both had middling regular season records and stats but came up big in the playoffs. Not a HOF player but Plunkett two magical Super Bowl runs (including as the Wild Card) even if he did rip my heart out beating my Football Team for his second SB

Guys like Plunkett and Archie Manning might have been viewed completely differently had they been drafted by different teams. Had Terry Bradshaw and Bob Griese, for example, been drafted by the Saints and Patriots, would their careers have been any better than those guys?
