The Giants are doubling down on Daniel Jones. They agreed today on a deal with free agent receiver Kenny Golladay, ensuring their young quarterback will have an intriguing collection of pass catchers to work with.
Per reports, it’s a four-year contract worth $72 million. The Lions could have locked Golladay down for another year at about $18 million by using the franchise tag, but they didn’t want to make that much of a commitment.
Now the Giants will have the ability to go with three-receiver sets including Golladay, Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepard. They also have a pair of above-average receiving threats at other positions (Saquon Barkley and Evan Engram).
Golladay is big, with more ability than most to come down with contested balls. He’s averaged 16.7 yards per catch over the last three years, 2nd-most among the 65 wide receivers who’ve caught least 100 passes since 2018.
It remains to be seen, of course, whether Jones can deliver those passes with the same kind of touch and accuracy as Matthew Stafford. Two years into his career, Jones doesn’t look like he’s going to develop into a Stafford-type quarterback. But with the kind of weapons they’re collecting, the Giants are at least giving him a chance to succeed.
