Question

What’s the only defunct team that’s won multiple league championships? (This team won two titles, then folded.)

Answer

Canton Bulldogs. They won league titles in 1923 and 1924 but played their last game in 1926. When the league started in 1920, Jim Thorpe was on Canton’s roster, but he wasn’t playing for them when they won their titles. Four other teams that won titles in the ‘20s no longer exist: Akron Pros, Cleveland Bulldogs, Frankford Yellow Jackets and Providence Steam Roller.

The Canton Bulldogs won three titles,1922,1923,1924.They changed their name to the Cleveland Bulldogs in 1924.That makes four total defunct NFL franchises with more NFL Championships than 12 current NFL teams with none.

There are ties between the two teams. Same coach, and some of the same players. Same team name. But the NFL considers them to be different teams. The Canton Bulldogs didn't play in 1924 and came back in 1925. In the 1925 standings, you'll see both the Canton Bulldogs and Cleveland Bulldogs listed next to each other in the middle of the table.

As you say they didn't play in 1924,Then why do you have Canton Bulldogs winning Championship in 1924 in your above original answer????Who won in 1922???The Canton Bulldogs won in 22 and 23. Cleveland Bulldogs won in 24,same team moved with new owner .Still the Bulldogs as is the Vegas Raiders today after moving and as the Chargers moving.Same teams.

You are correct in pointing out that Canton won in 22-23, not 23-24 as stated. And the NFL has some inconsistencies in its record keeping on this kind of a thing. Cleveland Browns history, for example, didn't stay with the Baltimore Ravens. But the Colts, Raiders, Chargers and Titans took their history with them. In this case, there's the added dimension of the franchise re-appearing in 1925, with the league having both Canton Bulldogs and Cleveland Bulldogs. On this type of issue, I'm going to fall in and follow the lead of the NFL itself.
