Question

Who was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns the last time they finished a regular season with more wins than the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Answer

Bud Carson. Tiring of losses in the playoffs, the Browns fired Marty Schottenheimer after the 1988 season. In 1989, the Browns won the AFC Central with a record of 9-6-1 – a half game ahead of the Houston Oilers and Pittsburgh Steelers.

"Tiring of losses in the playoffs" ha! Good ole Marty ... always good for a playoff loss as a favorite. No one could snatch defeat from victory like him. He has a twin in MLB ... Dusty Baker.

Marty was great. A better coach, in my opinion, then many who are currently in the Hall of Fame. He went 5-13 in playoff games, but there was some weird stuff in some of them. Most recently, Chargers were leading the Patriots 21-14 and intercepted Tom Brady with 6 minutes left, but the defensive back allowed Troy Brown to punch the ball loose. Are we blaming that on poor coaching? Nate Kaeding misses 3 field goals in a 3-point loss against the Jets. I'm not blaming that one on him.

Not to mention, "the fumble."

14 - 2 record and they let him go. I agree Ian. Marty was a great coach. I was so happy they hired him. He was a winner. Better than most Charger coaches except Coryell. And liked to run the ball.

I'm a Marty defender too, but in that playoff loss to the Patriots, he let all the criticism and "chokenheimer" stuff get to him, and he desperately challenged the fumble. That lost time out appeared to make a difference, as the Chargers tried to get the ball back and score late. He panicked. Oh, and those playoff losses to the Colts when he was with the Chiefs were heartbreaking to me.

Never understood a Coach having a winning record and still get fired . You have to get to the play offs first and it does not matter what the record is he is 5-13 so that means his teams was in 18 play off games and 13 times his team had there worst gameof the season . How many coaches would love to have the chance to be in 18 play off games. Great coach if any coach deserve a ring Marty did .

One could say that he was cursed with lower tier QBs. Kosar was good, but Elway was Elway. Then there were the guys like DeBerg, Bono, Grbac, a young Drew Brees and the no SBs Philip Rivers. He also lost to other HOF QBs like a few times to Jim Kelly and Brady and even Dan Marino.

Ian - I was at that Keading game. I don't normally disagree with you, but I will here. Chargers moving the ball almost at will outside the tackles, then when it matters Marty runs LT up the middle 3 times in a row for a total of 1 yard. Then sends out a rookie kicker in the rain. Yeah, it's on Marty.

Todd's memory of the game was better than mine. I had forgotten about it raining, and I wasn't aware of the conservative play-calling dimension. (Also note that in my original comment, I wrote that Kaeding missed 3 field goals; not the case -- he missed just the 40-yarder in overtime). But I think think Marty was a very good coach.

Marty was a good coach but...The play you mentioned against the Pats was 4th fraking down and I think the coach shoulda maybe told his dbs that they don't need a pick

I know they get paid for picks but on 4th down it's somewhat unproductive
