The Giants have settled on Brian Daboll as their new coach. They’re hoping he can do for Daniel Jones what he did for Josh Allen in Buffalo. But that could be a tall order.
Jones had some good moments as a rookie, finishing with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while starting 12 games. But he’s really struggled the last two years, throwing only 21 touchdowns in 25 games.
John Mara says they’re sticking with Jones. That makes sense, in that he hasn’t gotten a lot of help. The offensive line hasn’t been good enough, and their two high-profile wide receiver additions last year (Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney) were both plagued by injuries. So reasonable to give him one final chance to turn things around.
While Jones doesn’t run like Josh Allen, he has above-average mobility. And there will be adequate pass catchers around him if they can keep everyone healthy.
But Jones hasn’t done much to indicate he’ll turn things around. He’s had issues with getting caught holding the ball, not aware of the pass rush around him. He hasn’t gotten better. And he’s fumbled 37 times in 38 career games. Mostly, he just hasn’t won enough – he’s 12-25 as a starter, with seemingly not enough ability to elevate the players around him.
Jones has finished with fewer touchdowns passes than starts two years in a row. Not many quarterbacks have done that in the last 20 years. And of the group that has, none of them were able to ever really turn things around, becoming notable NFL quarterbacks.
