Question
Paul Warfield, Eric Metcalf, Charley Taylor. What do these players have in common?
Answer
All were primarily running backs in college, but transitioned to become primarily wide receivers at the NFL level. With Warfield and Taylor playing plenty of tailback at Ohio State and Arizona State, respectively, that contributed to both wearing No. 42 during their many pro seasons with Cleveland, Miami and Washington. They were the 3rd and 11th picks of the first round of the 1964 draft. Metcalf (who played his college ball at Texas) was a first-round pick of the Browns 25 years later. He was listed as a running back for his first six seasons, but became primarily a wide receiver after a trade to Atlanta in 1995. Taylor passed away at 80 on February 19.
