Question
A sister question to the one posted yesterday (with Denver, Indianapolis and Washington switching quarterbacks every year). What was the last team to have a new starting quarterback in Week 1 eight years in a row? The wording, observe, is slightly different than what was posed yesterday (which required all of the quarterbacks to be different). For this team, it used seven different starting quarterbacks from 1998 to 2006, with one of those guys starting in 1999 and 2001 and another starting in Week 1 in 2004 and 2006 (so those two guys were “new” starters in all four of those seasons).
Answer
Chicago Bears. From 1998 to 2006, the Bears’ initial starting quarterbacks were Erik Kramer (who also started in 1997, so he wasn’t new), Shane Matthews, Cade McNown, Matthews, Jim Miller, Kordell Stewart, Rex Grossman, Kyle Orton and Grossman. Grossman started in again in Week 1 in 2007, ending the streak.
