Question

There was some speculation earlier in the week about Drew Brees possibly considering a comeback. He’s 43. Who was the last quarterback in his 40s who started an NFL game after not being on a roster the previous season?

Answer

Steve DeBerg. DeBerg retired after the 1993 season. In 1998, he came back to sign with Atlanta, serving as a 44-year-old backup behind Chris Chandler. He started one game that season (a 28-3 loss against the Jets). The Falcons went 14-2 that season, eventually losing in the Super Bowl against the Broncos.
