Question

Travis Etienne had a good bounce-back season. He ran for 1,125 yards despite missing all of his rookie year with a foot injury. Who was the last other running back selected in the first round who didn’t play at all as a rookie, then came back and ran for over 1,000 yards in his second season?

Answer

Willis McGahee. McGahee was picked by Buffalo in the first round of the 2003 draft, despite having suffered a significant knee injury in college football’s national title game. McGahee came back to run for 1,128 yards in 2004. Three other running backs have run for over 1,000 yards in their second season after not carrying the ball at all as rookies. Priest Holmes (Ravens, 1998), Ricky Watters (49ers, 1992) and Lawrence McCutcheon (Rams, 1973). Holmes and McCutcheon played some as rookies, but without running the ball. Watters was hurt for his entire rookie season.
