Question
The Texans on Sunday fired Lovie Smith, giving them back-to-back coaches who lasted only one year. They fired David Culley after the 2021 season. What is the only team in the Super Bowl era that has put together three straight one-and-done coaches? (For this question, ignore interim coaches and midseason replacements – looking for a franchise that three offseasons in a row hired a new coach, with him not lasting until the start of the next season.)
Answer
San Francisco 49ers. In 1976, they hired Monte Clark. In 1977, they hired Ken Meyer. And in 1978 they turned to Pete McCulley (who lasted only 9 games before being replaced by Fred O’Connor). The 49ers in 1979 finally got it right, hiring Bill Walsh. The Vikings in the mid-‘80s had a pair of one-year coaches (Les Steckel in 1984, and bringing back legend Bud Grant for one year).
