Question

Charles White died on Wednesday, from complications caused by liver cancer. At Southern Cal, he won the Heisman Trophy in 1979. He was not as notable at the pro level but came up huge with the Rams in 1987, rushing for 1,374 yards. He didn’t run for more than 342 yards in any of his other seven years in the NFL. Who is the only other player who finished his career with over 1,000 more rushing yards in his best season than in any other year that he played?

Answer

Robert Edwards. Edwards had a terrific rookie season with the Patriots in 1998, rushing for 1,115 yards, but he badly injured his knee playing flag football at a Pro Bowl event at the end of that season. He played in only one more NFL season, running for 107 yards with the Dolphins in 2002. (Edwards then went to the CFL and had two 1,000-yard seasons there.)
