Question

With others bowing out, Tyler Huntley was a Pro Bowl quarterback despite starting only four games for Baltimore. In the Super Bowl era, who are the only other two quarterbacks who have been named to the Pro Bowl despite starting fewer than half of their teams’ games? Hint: the players come from the 1969 and 1975 seasons (and very few readers have heard of either one of them).

Answer

Mike Boryla and Mike Livingston. Boryla went 2-3 as a starter for the Eagles in 1975. As with Huntley, the league turned to him after others declined to play (as luck would have it, Boryla threw 2 late touchdowns to lift the NFC to a 23-20 win). Livingston was a more credible choice. With Len Dawson hurt, Livingston went 6-0 as a fill-in quarterback for the 1969 Kansas City team that won Super Bowl IV.

Never heard of either. Reading Mike Boryla's Wikipedia entry produced this nugget: "Selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the 1974 NFL Draft, Boryla was soon traded to the Eagles for first- and sixth-round draft picks..." So, the Bengals essentially traded a 4th round pick for a 1st and 6th. Neat trade.

Hmm. That's weird. Why would the Eagles trade a first-round pick for a player they could have taken in the third or fourth round? Wiki indicates Boryla had the leverage of threatening to move to the WFL. Cincinnati didn't cash in on the pick. They had the 11th overall pick, but they selected wide receiver Billy Brooks, who didn't make much of an impact in the pros -- 93 catches and 7 TDs in four years with the Bengals (not to be confused with Bill Brooks, who was selected by the Colts 10 years later and had a solid career). Thanks for passing along.

I'm always baffled at the depth of every one's trivia knowledge. Here is one non football trivia question. How deep is Mark Twain?
