Question
Justin Tucker last year attempted a league-high 43 field goals – his third season with at least 40 attempts. In NFL history, who is the only kicker with even more seasons with 40-plus field goal attempts? The player spent nine years in the league, with one Super Bowl ring and one Pro Bowl appearance. His four seasons with 40-plus attempts came consecutively (and long ago).
Answer
Chip Lohmiller. Drafted in the second round in 1988, Lohmiller was a scoring machine for Washington, but more than volume of work rather than efficiency (in his seven seasons there, he never converted more than 75 percent of his field goals). Other kickers have attempted 40-plus field goals three times, including three in the early days of the Super Bowl era: Jan Stenerud, David Ray and Roy Gerela. More recently: David Akers and Stephen Goskowski.
