Question
Bijan Robinson of Texas is expected to be selected in the first round of the draft, and if he’s as successful as the other coveted backs who’ve come out of that school, he’ll prove to be a good choice. Previously, four running backs from Texas have been chosen in the first round, and all of them have had at least three seasons with over 1,000 combined yards. Who were those four backs?
Answer
Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, Cedric Benson and Eric Metcalf. Campbell and Williams were both Heisman winners, and both won NFL rushing titles. Benson died in a motorcycle accident in August, 2019. He was drafted by the Bears but didn’t blossom until he was with Cincinnati, with 3 straight 1,000-yard seasons. Metcalf is the most obscure of the four, having been drafted by the Browns as a running back but really being more of a runner-receiver-returner weapon. He switched his position from running back to wide receiver when he was traded to Atlanta in 1995. Metcalf never had a 1,000-yard rushing season but caught 104 passes for 1,189 yards with the Falcons in 1995. He had two other seasons where he went over 1,000 combined yards rushing and receiving.
